Wilson promises improved power and, perhaps more importantly, improved durability with Wilson Extreme Octane 17. Octane has some classic synthetic gut attributes, but it differs in its use of bi-directional “X-Bands” of Nomex, a derivative of Kevlar more known for its use in fire-resistant suits for race car drivers. That addition enhances durability, elasticity, and resistance to frictional heat. Also, the higher gauge affords added feel.
Similar to the top-selling Prince Duraflex, Octane has a very solid feel with little shock or vibration. During testing, the string showed remarkable control for a synthetic as well as consistency on contact. Octane’s silicone coating not only makes stringing easy, but it also allows the strings to slide back into their original position – no straightening necessary. The string exhibits an ability to hold tension comparable to other synthetic gut strings.
