Scott Nichols – On The Other Hand Newsletter – Vol 11 – February 2013
Hopefully the following tips on doubles shot selection may aid you in helping you win some of your doubles matches at league, school or in tournaments.
As I coach doubles to Junior and Adult tennis teams, I continue to be amazed at how many of the players enjoy hitting ground strokes versus volley’s; rather hit hard versus using finesse and lastly, rather stand still versus constantly move your feet and follow the ball.
Possible reasons for this may be the desire for ‘instant gratification,’ win the point quickly by players of all levels and ages and not being as patient as they could be and lastly, hoping for short cuts to quick success versus paying your dues and in due time receiving notable credit.
My responsibility is to continue to educate and teach all players why softer hitting, happy feet, consistency and patience BLENDED along with players desire to hit hard is the success we look for because it provides successful results.
For those of you that are competing and need more equipment for your matches; like an extra tennis racket, string or a double or triple bag, you can order direct from me and you will get a 20% discount off retail price for the month of February.
Tennis Tip
(For your tennis stringing)
Looser tension strings create some comfortably for your arm, power and a little
less control unless you add spin or alter your stroke a little bit. Tighter strings
create control and less depth unless you really string faster which can add stress
to your arm.
My suggestion is to try 45lbs-50lbs on 95-110sq inches and see for your self.
Ask your club tennis shop about their demo rackets at the club and ask for these
tensions and they should aid you accordingly.
See you soon,
