The two specific angles in tennis are cross court and down the line. When preparing for a forehand volley, as you turn you keep both hands close together, ‘handcuffed,’ and then your set to contact. Meeting the ball out in front, ahead of your non-dominant hand will create a cross court angle, meeting the ball slightly later (“Later straighter”) will provide a down the line ball or straighter. Same on the backhand volley, as you turn both hands are close together, but as you contact the ball way out in front for a cross court angle, your non-dominant hand is slowly moving backwards for power and balance. You also, focus on the down the line angle the same way as on the forehand volley with a later contact point, ‘later-straighter.’ All this sounds easy, with practice, moving your feet correctly, watching your self on video etc. all these tools will aid your success rate, “early out in front for cross court and later-straighter for down the line.
